On December 20, 2025, in Tuyen Quang, the scientific conference on new advances in interventional radiology was successfully held with the participation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Dang Luu – Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnamese Society of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and President of the Vietnam Interventional Radiology Branch, along with representatives of the Tuyen Quang Department of Health and medical experts from across the country. The event created a forum for academic exchange and updates on professional trends in the field of Interventional Radiology.  

The role of interventional radiology in modern treatment  

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Dang Luu emphasized that Interventional Radiology is a minimally invasive treatment field that has been strongly implemented in Vietnam, delivering clear effectiveness in the treatment of many complex diseases, helping reduce hospital stays and ensuring patient safety.  

He affirmed that the conference was organized to create a substantive scientific forum where physicians can share experience in technical implementation, update new trends, and address challenges in clinical practice, especially in provinces that are in the development phase of this specialty.

In-depth topics discussed  

The conference program included numerous scientific presentations delivered by speakers from central and local hospitals. The content focused on topics that are up to date and widely applicable in clinical practice:  

• Updates on neuro-interventional radiology 
• Latest advances in the intervention of stroke, cerebral aneurysms, and oncology 
• Applications of minimally invasive techniques in treatment 
• Updates on new trends and technologies in interventional radiology, including the application of artificial intelligence (AI)… 

In addition to scientific presentations, open discussion sessions after each topic allowed delegates to exchange views and analyze techniques from a practical perspective, thereby helping to shape effective implementation strategies for provincial-level hospitals.

Practical implementation in Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang  

A highlight of the conference was the sharing of practical experience from Tuyen Quang General Hospital and Ha Giang General Hospital – two units that have boldly implemented interventional radiology despite challenges in human resources and equipment.  

Here, many advanced techniques have been successfully applied, such as endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms, mechanical thrombectomy for cerebral artery occlusion, embolization of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM), and flow-diverting stent placement…  

These initial results demonstrate clear effectiveness in emergency care and treatment, opening opportunities for local residents to access high-level techniques directly in their provinces instead of being referred to higher-level hospitals.

Orientation of the Local Health Sector  

A representative of the Tuyen Quang Department of Health stated that despite ongoing resource constraints, the province continues to prioritize investment in infrastructure and promote professional cooperation with major centers. The goal for the coming period is to enhance human resource capacity, standardize technical procedures, improve access to treatment for local residents, and expand intervention models suited to local conditions.  

The spirit of “leaving no one behind” in access to quality healthcare services was reiterated as a guiding principle, especially in the context of innovation, digital transformation, and improving the quality of grassroots-level healthcare.

Towards VSIR 2026  

The conference in Tuyen Quang concluded with positive signals of strengthened professional linkage between different levels of the healthcare system, creating a favorable foundation for the continued development of Interventional Radiology in Vietnam in the new phase. The connections and knowledge shared at the event will serve as a premise for units to prepare for, participate in, and disseminate value at  the 13th Congress of Vietnamese Society of Interventional Radiology (VSIR 2026) , scheduled to take place on  April 17–18, 2026   at  Muong Thanh Luxury Quang Ninh Hotel, Quang Ninh Province .  

Bringing together domestic and international experts and oriented toward expanding the application of modern interventional techniques and technologies, VSIR 2026 is expected to become a major scientific highlight of the year, contributing to innovation, professional advancement, and strengthened academic cooperation nationwide.
